The Lapsus Calami of Principle for Principal
The Lapsus Calami of Principle for Principal The Lapsus Calami of Principle for Principal The Lapsus Calami of Principle for Principal By Maeve Maddox The third time I let the erroneous ââ¬Å"principle partsâ⬠slip into a published post instead of the correct ââ¬Å"principal parts,â⬠I began to worry. Why would I continue to make this mistake even though I know perfectly well that the word spelled principle is used only as a noun and never as an adjective? Principal, on the other hand, is usually an adjective, although it may also be used as a noun: principle (noun): a fundamental truth; a rule adopted as a guide to action. The desire to help the helpless is a basic principle of morality. She lives according to the principle that it is always possible to be kind. principal (adjective): most important; highest in rank or order. Dr. Singh is the principal author of the study. Itââ¬â¢s necessary to memorize the principal parts of irregular verbs. principal (noun): a person occupying the most important position in an organization or activity. Mr. McCarthy has been named the principal in the lawsuit. Ms. Washington is the principal at Jones School. According to Sigmund Freud, when we make an error in speech (ââ¬Å"a slip of the tongueâ⬠) or an error in writing (lapsus calami), we are being guided by ââ¬Å"a subdued wish, conflict, or train of thought guided by the ego and the rules of correct behavior.â⬠Cognitive psychologists, on the other hand, say that such slips can be caused by mere inattention or lack of knowledge. Knowing that my errors with principal/principle werenââ¬â¢t the result of lack of knowledge or inattention (I proof these posts at least six times before submitting them), I read further. I think Iââ¬â¢ve found my answer in this explanation quoted in the Wikipedia article ââ¬Å"Freudian Slipâ⬠: [these errors may be caused by] the existence of some locally appropriate response pattern that is strongly primed by its prior usage, recent activation or emotional change or by the situation calling conditions. My slip with principal/principle always occurs in the context of writing about the principal parts of the verb. And what are these parts? They are: present, past, past participle, and present participle. I think my brain anticipates the -le of the word participle. That may explain why I write the term incorrectly, but why donââ¬â¢t I catch the error when I proofread? Tom Stafford, a lecturer in psychology at the University of Sheffield in England, says that itââ¬â¢s difficult to catch errors because the brain generalizes the simple components of sentences so it can focus on complex tasks, like combining sentences into ideas. We donââ¬â¢t catch errors because we donââ¬â¢t see them. Writing about typographical errors, Freud cites a case in which an article had been carefully proofed by the author and the editor-in-chief of the paper in which it was to be published; both men were satisfied that everything was correct. The printerââ¬â¢s reader caught the mistake that the other men missed: Our readers will bear witness to the fact that we have always acted in aà selfishà manner for the good of the community. The intended word was unselfish. Stafford suggests that one way to catch errors to which weââ¬â¢ve become blind is to change the font and colors of the proof copy; changing the visual form makes it easier to see details we would otherwise miss. Itââ¬â¢s also probably a good idea to acquaint yourself with your own particular bà ªtes noires and be on the lookout for them. Things like mixing up principal and principle. Free Speech Controversy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Free Speech Controversy - Essay Example The mother then reported the content of that book to a local news station known as KOAT, which was said to have been biased on how it reported the case. As the case remains undecided, the book may have been removed from the shelves of the library because they found out that it violated school district policies. She brought the book to the attention of other authority bodies such as the Public School officials from Rio Rancho who also agreed on the inappropriateness of the content. On one side of the debate are Catreena Lopez and the Public School officials who are against the book remaining at easy reach of under age students who should not be exposed to pornographic content. On the other side is CBLF that is fighting the challenge and ensuring that the school district of Rio Rancho abides by its pre-established challenge policy (Williams). This policy concerns requesting of reconsideration on library materials as well as the formation of a review committee that should decide the appropriateness of the book and whether it should remain in the library. In this case, the remedy being sought is amendment of the constitution. This is because the challengers would lose the case if the First Amendment stands behind the author of the work in question. The first amendment eliminates governmental constraints to speech implying that it is protecting the author of the book in question (First Amendment). This seems to imply that the only way the book can be kept completel y out of the library shelves is to amend the constitution and include clauses that would forbid the content in that book. Therefore, the challengers are seeking the amendment of the constitution to accommodate their claims of what inappropriateness is and may even prompt the removal of other materials if the amendment goes through. This is not the first time that such a case has been brought up but CNN also highlighted a

Metaphorically Speaking â⬠Sonnet 73 Essay example -- Sonnet essays
Metaphorically Speaking ââ¬â Sonnet 73à à à Love is a blanket of bright and colorful flowers that covers a beautifully rolling meadow on a breezy summer day. Similar metaphorical images appear in many famous poems including Shakespeare's "Sonnet 73." The metaphor is the most basic device poets use to convey meanings beyond literal speech (Guth 473). Shakespeare's use of metaphors in this sonnet conveys his theme of the inescapable aging process. Shakespeare "establishes and extends a metaphor that illuminates the poem's central meaning" and compares the inevitability of old age to three different aspects of nature (Prather). Similarly all the metaphorical quatrains begin with either the phrase "thou mayest in me behold" or "In me thou seest" (Shakespeare 1-5). These phrases reveal the author's awareness of the natural process occurring within his body and he compares this aging process to the three natural occurrences of nature including the seasonal change to autumn, a sunset, and a slowly perishing fire. à Shakespeare metaphorically relates his timely aging to the seasonal change into autumn. The first four lines of his poem read "That time of year thou mayst in me behold / When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang / Upon those boughs which shake against the cold, / Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang" (Shakespeare 1-4). Shakespeare compares aging and the approach of death to the coming and setting in of autumn. Guth and Rico explain that Shakespeare uses the metaphor of autumn to describe the "approaching of old age as the late autumn of the speaker's life" (568). He gives his readers the image of the last of the yellow leaves clinging to the bare branches much like humans who cling to their ... ...s thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong, / To love that well which thou must leave ere long [before long] (Shakespeare 13-14). Through these last two lines, Shakespeare conveys to his readers the importance of holding on to life and love while it exists for one day it will cease to be. à à Works Cited Guth, Hans P. and Gabriele L. After You, My Dear Alphone (Mrs Wilson) Essay
Mrs Wilson seems, to me at least, to be a bit old fashioned ââ¬â something that isnââ¬â¢t quite so odd, considering the story was written in the 1940ââ¬â¢s. I can imagine her being the typical housewife, struggling in the kitchen, gossiping and worrying with the neighbourhood women and fussing over minor details concerning her precious son, Johnny. However, her temper can get the best of her, creating tension and thus leaving a situation next to unbearable. In the storyââ¬â¢s situation I know I would find it unbearable ââ¬â by sheer awkwardness! As soon as little black Boyd enters her house, the assumptions pile up in Mrs Wilsonââ¬â¢s head. Instantly feeling sorry for him and wanting to take care of him, she makes sure Johnny doesnââ¬â¢t take advantage of him and starts feeding the new boy. As kind hearted as it may seem, it took a nasty turn towards the end. When she talks about Boydââ¬â¢s parents and how he needs to eat enough to work hard, she assumes he comes from a poor black family, struggling to make ends meet. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing about Boyd that would lead her to think so, except that heââ¬â¢s black and smaller than Johnny. She just immediately builds up this whole idea of this poor little boy. That really is a vague estimate of a book-coverââ¬â¢s content (â⬠judging a book by itââ¬â¢s coverâ⬠), that she nonetheless is sure of. And doing so makes her prejudiced. She hardly listens to Boydââ¬â¢s explanation of his familyââ¬â¢s situation, and certainly doesnââ¬â¢t accept it. Not even when he tells her, that his father is a foreman. Later on, she pretty much forces their own unwanted clothes on the boy, expecting gratitude in return. When Boydââ¬â¢s response was wonder, not understanding why he would be needing them, she becomes aggressive. Her reaction makes her seem arrogant, almost as if she needs the boy to be inferior. This makes her very unlikeable and shows her true colour. In todayââ¬â¢s Denmark, there are people of all colours, ethnicities and and religions. Over the years this has become more and more accepted, but still there are Danes who look at them with distrust or just distaste. This can be a result of the criminal doings, that are caused by the immigrants. It can also be because these immigrants come bringing foreign culture to Denmark, which some Danes find hard to understand. And itââ¬â¢s an old habit, that what you donââ¬â¢t know, you fear. When talking only about prejudice towards different races, it instantly becomes more difficult to explain. Racists can have many different reasons as to why they feel a certain way or even resentment towards another race. Some have got their opinions in childhood from their parents and some from experience. Whatever the reason, it is generalisation of a whole bunch of people and doing so is always wrong.

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 690 Downloads: 4 Date added: 2017/09/21 Category Advertising Essay Type Argumentative essay Topics: AIDS (HIV) Essay Competition Essay Did you like this example? AIDS AND ROLE OF YOUTHS TO CREATE AWARNESS ABOUT AIDS AMONG PEOPLE most commonly AIDS is called as silent killer, The main reason for AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) is HIV (Human Immuno Defiency virus). when this virus enters our body, immediately changes into RNA, and then spreads quickly. After that it starts to destroy the white blood corpuscles. Because of this our resistance towards diseases gets decreased. actually thr is an difference between aids and hiv.. that is, the final stage of the hiv virus is called aids,at this stage the human body cannot withstand even an ordinary cold. In the year 1996 according to the survey, about 5000 persons per day were affected by AIDS in the whole world. In 1996, it was also discovered that the virus can be controlled to a certain extent. The survey in 2002, says that about 3. 97 millions of people are suffering from this disease in India. many thinks that the virus spreads when we shake hands or eat together or kiss t he affected persons or even use their clothes or even through musquito bites.. but 100% it is not possible.. becoz it is not an communicable disease. it can be transmitted only by the following modes: 1. Unprotected hetero contact. 2. Injection which is used without sterlising after using for HIV/aIDS affected person. 3. when we use the Blood of HIV affected person. 4. From the pregnant lady who is affected of AIDS to the child or through milk feeding. and the Symptoms may be: 1. Loss of 10% or more body weight 2. Fever of unknown origin 3. Pneumonia, brain tumours, unremitting diarrhea, swelling of lymph glands. then i ll speak about the Role of youth in HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention: Todays youth is going to build tomorrows future. we build the nation and we together build the world. Each one has their own responsibility in building a healthy world. Because of the scientific inventions many diseases are eradicated many can be cured but still there are certain exceptions like HIV virus which threatens the whole world. If every one follows a small concept A,B,C,D,E then we would easily eradicate the killer virus.. ie: A-Awareness among the family youth should create awareness about HIV in their family, because when the family realizes the importance of eradication of HIV, then the society will realize and then the nation will realize and finally all together the world will realize the importance of eradicating this virus. People of the whole world will be aware and take preventive measures. B-Being Self controled youth should understand their problems clearly. They should have self control and they should be motivated to concentrate on good aspects of life. They should have awareness about the preventive measures of HIV. C-Conducting competition and exhibition Youth should take the responsibility in conducting various types of competition and exhibitions in various schools, colleges regarding the awareness and prevention of HIV. D-DRAMA Students o f the college must be encouraged by their teachers and they should e taken to the rural areas, schools other educational institutions, offices etc. to conduct street plays to bring about the awareness among the people and the people should be thought clearly the preventive methods, symptoms, methods of testing the HIV virus and also the facilities provided by the government to the HIV affected. People must be given awareness in their vernacular language. E-Extending their support to the HIV affected person Youth have to discharge their responsibility of meeting the HIV affected peoples and giving them self-confidence and also encourage them to engage in some activities in which they are interested. I finally conclude that : HIV affected peoples can live to the maximum of 10 to 15 years. This period can be extended if they live happily. Only way to make them happy is to treat them as normal persons. india is in 42nd place in developing country 56th place in HDI but 2nd place in A IDS in the world. this situation can be changed only by the younths, becoz todays youths is tommrows future. finally i thank the management for giving me a youthful chance for creating an awarness among the students.
